It should be in a non-flammable container, as per the IEE wiring regs.
Basically, you shouldn't be able to touch any of the line terminals without
the use of tools, and the box should protect the surrounding items to some
extent from catching fire due to the unit sparking or overheating.  There
are other considerations, which is why there is probably a leaflet in the
box saying that you should consult a qualified electrician if you are in
doubt.
