X10 modulates the 50Hz mains carrier at every zero crossing*. The mains
carrier is modulated with burts of 120kHz. 48 or more cycles of 120kHz
is regarded as a 1 bit, fewer than 48 cycles of 120kHz is regarded as a
0 bit. The modulation window is between 250 usecs and 900 usecs of the
powerline zero crossing.

[* some controllers actually modulate twice more with successive delays,
in order to coincide with the zero crossing of all 3 phases in a 3 phase
system].
