What sort of stuff are you going to be doing?  I'll happily drop anything
on
you that you might want.

I too was a Java virgin, but found it very easy to learn and use. 
Excellent
language for home automation. Takes care to get realtime response, but I'm
managing to scan buttons five times a second while ticking over. :-)

I just got the Dallas one. I'm using the old 68 pin versions, but want to
buy
new stuff.  I'm using the modules from www.pointsix.com for input and
output.
