When I purchased my screen I had a look at how Stewart make their multi
format screens work and this was how they do it, mind you the mask is very
close to the screen to prevent the shadow effect. Its worth noting also
that
even with a 4:3 mask Stewart put a border all the way round, the idea is
that the sides which are not always completely flat are not used as the
display area. If I can work out how to do it I'll have to post a picture of
the projector and its mounting , a work of art or what!
