RE: Voice control

I've been dabbling with voice control for a couple of weeks. My virgin
experience was with Homevoice, which I found was quite good, especially the
way it worked with Homevision. Its got lots of features and you can voice
control anything. You can also get homevision to get homevoice to speak and
reply in your own syntax to any event etc. I was happy enough with it until
after a month I saw that an upgrade was out and was going to cost me an
extra 80 quid or so. I got on to Homevoice and asked if I was entitled for
a free upgrade and basically, no. After some dialogue I got the distinct
impression they weren't to interested in what I thought and I could either
lump it or like it. However the retailer I bought it off put some pressure
on them also, and they have agreed to post a limited upgrade (not all
functions) on the website. That was about 2 months ago and nothing has
happened yet !!!

I'm now trying out HAL2000, and to be honest, it leaves Homevoice
standing. You don't have to train your voice, the commands you issue are
simple and make it seem like you are actually conversing with somebody,
rather than issuing commands to a screen. My wife thinks its spooky. The
voice recognition is in my opinion excellent and the stuff you can do with
it is unreal. My wife likes the part where she can tell HAL what she needs
for the shopping as the week goes by, and then ask him to repeat or print
the weeks reminders before she tots off down to tesco's. I'm only using
the free trial version but, there is supposed to be a new version out
before Christmas, and the Playstation2 has just been knocked off my list.

Anyway, what I'm really interested to find out next, as I assume you are,
is has anybody used the whole house microphone systems you can get for this
type of thing, and are they any good. I posted a query on this on a couple
of boards, and email lists and got no replies, so I'm guessing not many
people have tried it. I'd be interested in finding out peoples opinion of
it cos, the equipment is a bit pricey and I don't want to make sure it
works well.
