I have just gone out to tender for a proximity system for our site
buildings.  For a quite neat system comprising of 11 doors it is around
£20K.  These are quite robust units with up to 50 cards and also the
operators console including tracking software etc.

They did say for a single reader it is about a grand (again commercial
unit)
