Nigel, I like your ceiling rose idea, take a look at the Klik range of
roses' they are a two part fitting you surface mount one half and the other
part (which supports the lamp fitting) clips into it, they are not
expensive, I dont know if you can modify them to provide enough room take a
look at RS 226-6117 if your have the November set it is on page 2-474 or

I have used the wall sockets that they do which is for connecting my wall /
occasional lamps to my lighting gadget to prevent there use. The only
problem I have found is that if you have not come across them before you
are
tempted to pull the plug from the wall when actually you push it down then
