Re: X-10 signal attenuation
Hi Julian,
Do you mean 2 metres from the AW10U of 2 metres from the socket that HV was
originally plugged into so that it is still 13-17m away from the AW10U ?
It could be that something close to the original location of HV was sucking
all the signal from the powerline and by moving it further away from the
culprit enough of the X10 is now getting through.
Try putting HV back where it was and unplugging everything in the
immeadiate area to find what is killing it. Suspect anything with Motors,
Switch mode PSU's (PC, TV, Monitor, LV lighting with electronic
transformers) etc. Many of these have capacitors across their mains input
which is designed to prevent interference escaping onto the mains.
Unfortunately X10 is by definition, an interference signal, deliberately
introduced onto the mains with the aim of reaching everything in the house.
The suppression capacitors in other equipment kill interference generated
within the equipment but can also act as a dead short to the X10 signal. If
you can find what is causing your problem then you can try to fit a filter
to that. You will need a filter designed to stop interference getting into
equipment. These consist of chokes which severely limit any interference
(or X10 signal) or surges trying to flow into the equipment. Anything that
makes it through the chokes then gets greeted by a combination of
capacitors and voltage dependant resistors which kill the residual
interference/surge dead.
See if you can find the item causing the problem first. All your other X10
stuff may be working on a borderline signal level with only the AW10
showing problems at the moment.

Subject: [ukha_d] X-10 signal attenuation
We have been having great fun trying to track down why the HomeVision
would only control a a AW10U switch occasionally. In the end we plugged
the HV into a socket only 2Metres away and all was well. Originally the
connection was only 15M away.
Has anybody else had problems with X-10 signal propagation?
