There's always a different from of radiation- lasers. Realtime Control
have a set of kits for data transmission at:

The kits look rather nice, and although I don't have direct experience
of the laser products, the Anenometer kit is so good, I'm currently
finishing off the Linux driver for it!

Don't let the fact they are in Australia put you off- I got a delivery
in a matter of days, which came as a bit of a surprise.
