Thanks Nigel/Keith,

The Solid State Relays look cool, especially since they have zero volt
phase
switching.  Considerably more expensive once you add a power supply &
heatsink though.  :-(

I was going to suggest a contactor but Nigel beat me to it  :-)))

As an alternative...how about a Solid State Relay.
Farnell do SSR's capable of switching 25A 600V with a 1 second overload
rating of 64A and a single cycle surge of 175A.
