Re: Showshifter vs. Tivo - ReplayTV wins?

Should also of said,

a) Video card needs to be pci, any recommendations?
b) I assume Tivo cannot be used in this kind of mode (i.e. no sub)?

Subject: Re: [ukha_d] Showshifter vs. Tivo - ReplayTV wins?

Hi all,

I've been thinking of something along the lines of a Tivo, but have no
experience of any of the solutions that have been talked about.

My first thought was pc/ss, but general concensus here seems to be forget it?
Seem to be able to get a Tivo for around =A3199 (+=A3200 sub, ouch)
Now that the Tivo 2 is on sale in the states ($399 + $250 sub) I assume whe= n
it reaches these sures then the remaining stocks of Tivo1 will sell for a discount...
ReplayTV (when available) seems a better spec, and no sub?

But my needs are for a basic box which will record whatever is coming out o= f
the scart socket of my NTL cable box (ha pc will decide what channel it is<= BR> on, perhaps with some help from digiguide, and just tell the box to
start/stop recording). I'm not after (at the moment anyway) the ability to<= BR> pause live tv etc.

I have all the kit I need to build the box, except the video capture card,<= BR> so I can afford to experiment with this concept and then go down the
Tivo1/Tivo2/ReplayTV route if it doesnt work out.

So my question is (got there in the end) what frame size (e.g. 640x480) and=
fps do I need from the video capture card (doesnt need to be a tv card) to<= BR> match (or better) the quality of the Tivo?

I'm not too worried about disk space, as the box could archive recordings t= o
the ha pc when it's not recording.

Many thanks
Tony T
