GPRS (always on) is only available from Vodafone in the UK at this
time, and it's quite costly. It's billed as a supplement to a normal
air time subscription. Strangely it only seems possible to buy GPRS
phones - there are no datacards available yet.
Orange are the only operators to support HSCD - which bonds multiple
channels to give high speed data (up to 28.8k). There are a limited
number of phones which support HSCD today - it probably makes sense
to look for an HSCD capable model, no doubt the other operators will
catch up in due course.
I have a Nokia datacard v2 on Orange and it works _really_ well. They
offer a data only subscription (cheap - can't remember how much
though) which saves SIM swapping. I got mine from www.wirefree.com.
