ITV Digital Offers Pirate Amnesty Sunday, November 18, 2001=20
Cash-stripped ITV Digial has offered an amnesty to people who watch the
service using pirate cards. To this end, ITV Dig has written to all of its
customers warning of the possible consequences of illegal viewing whilst,
a=
t
the same time, offering a "no questions asked" amnesty allowing
them to
trade in any "inadvertently acquired" pirated cards for a genuine
card.
It has been reported that around 10% of current subscribers could be
watching using pirated cards. This works out at the approximate equivalent
to =A33million a month of lost revenues. Eradicating this would lift
averag=
e
revenue per user by =A330 to =A3257 per year.
The cable companies have also suffered from hacking problems but, so far,
the Sky Digital service has proved beyond the piraters. However, the old
analogue service was hacked so often that its smart cards had to be changed
11 times.
Regards
Dan
