Say for example I was watching a DVD but wanted to send an IR command
to Homevision. Without the multipler I'd need to either have a
separate IR link back or walk to the other room...

Couple of questions regarding the switcher... will it be modular like
those rack mount boxes that you can just plug a new card in?

will it have a serial port for external control so that it could be
integrated with other HA stuff?
