I suggested the Enttec open soure for the price and the other reasons you
cite. That said, you might want to review the issues that this simple US$55
device has. It consists in a FT232BM USB to RS-232 , SP485CN RS-485
driver and 93C46 serial eprom chips.
The PC itself generates the DMX signal which can lead to flickering with
some devices/lights.
More sophisticated DMX512 interfaces have microcontrollers that generate
the signal independednt of the PC timing.
But who knows, maybe yet more twinkling and flickering lights would add to
the holiday spirit ;-)
