Insteon addenda



There are a couple of points that no one has yet made.

The Insteon protocol lends itself to data so we're likely to see some third
party devices that make use of this for thermostats, temperature, pressure,
power monitoring, etc. Insteon has development kits for such use.

There have been occasional posts here from those looking for galvanically
isolated ways to interface with outbuildings. Adding a SignaLinc RF to the
outbuilding should do the trick as long as there is an unobstructed line of
sight between it and a SignaLinc in the main building and the two are within
range. The RF link provides galvanic isolation.

I questioned why Insteon didn't use 418MHz so programmable remotes could
interface with it. The answer is in the FCC Part 15 rules. I had forgotten
there are rather severe restrictions on power for an RF _data_ link at
418MHz. These limits disappear at the higher frequencies being used.
