Temp. Control

I've used an X10 module that I've written a program which control
lights (Not fancy but I've ported it to Win. Linux and Mac OS X even
though it uses a web interface). As part of that I've add an X10
Thermostat control but it only accepts X10 commands and I would like to
take a shot at writing a more sophisticated algorithm for heat control
but to do that I need to know the current temp. Is there any cheap and
SIMPLE ways of getting that. (indoor/outdoor would be nice but not
critical)
