One neat way to cover this wire is to use self adhesive "edge banding" (used
for covering the edges of drawer and cabinet fronts) right on top of the
wire. I used this on a ceiling installation and it was barely detectable.
Because it made a nice clean line it looked like an integrated part of the
ceiling. Not as invisible as compound & paint but MUCH faster, easier and
cleaner and almost as unobtrusive. After I put it up nobody ever noticed it.
While the flat wire isn't cheap, it does have it's place if running
concealed wiring is too difficult.
