Just get a USB to Serial (RS-232) Adapter. Some of these do not work
right with some serial equipment. For example I bought one from
Staples office supply and the serial "break" did not work as it
should.

FYI - Serial communications is relatively easy to implement in
electronics. USB is quite difficult. So I imagine it would be less
expensive to manufacture a panel with serial rather than USB...
