Years ago when I worked for Binky I was in Houston's 5th ward, a notorious
slum. I drove by the place 4 times counting the address numbers because where
the site should have been, but all that was there was a run-down looking
abandoned crack house. Finally, before just leaving a guy comes running out
towards the street and asked "yo here to install ma security?". I paused, and
asked him to verify the address - it matched. I asked if he had a working
phone line, yes. I asked if the power was on, yes. Shit!
So I go in there and look around. I was gonna drop the job but there was
existing wiring from an old system (exposed), and I asked if I could just use
what I could from that. He agreed, apparently he was turned down by several
companies. He was pretty cool, a Jamaican accent. He had a full cooler of
beer and told me to help myself (which I did when the job was 95% complete).
He had to leave the site to pick up his girl, and said he'd be gone for an
hour. On his way out he placed a nickel plated .45 on the counter and told me
if anyone messed with me to "do what I gots to do". I told him the gun was
not necessary, but he insisted on leaving it with me. *That's* when I got a
little scared. I worked the 'hood before and never had a problem. I just put
some newspaper over the gun so it wasn't in plain site (and made damn sure my
prints didn't get on it).
When he got back I was done, on my second beer. And we just bullshitted for
an hour. Turned out okay, but I could have done without him scaring me like
that (like an incident was likely to happen).
