A good DVR records with proprietary watermarks and digital signatures
that are transparent to the user. The goal is for the video to be
proven authentic in court. These security features will remain if you
copy them to the removable media without changing the format, IOW,
it's not always necessary to turn over the whole unit unless a major
crime is committed and you want to leave absolutely no doubt you
tampered with it (in which case the cops will have seized it anyway).
