NEC 70 refers to CONDUCTOR separation not CABLES or CABLE ASSEMBLIES!
NM or Romex is a CABLE Asssemby! Separation in conduit, etc  is 2".
    If the AC is

NEC Prohibits using pipe, raceway or conduit for supporting conductors
