U.S. House, District 11

We recommend Kathy Castor

On Nov. 7, the vast majority of voters in Manatee County will decide whether to send Vern Buchanan or Christine Jennings to the U.S.
House of Representatives. But for about 12,000 voters, the ballot will include a lower-profile, far less acrimonious race instead.

Republican Eddie Adams Jr. and Democrat Kathy Castor are vying to represent U.S. House District 11, which stretches from Tampa
through southern St. Petersburg to northern Manatee, including parts of Palmetto and Bradenton. For the past 10 years, the seat has
been held by Jim Davis, the Democratic candidate for governor.

Castor, a former attorney for the Florida Department of Community Affairs, has served on the Hillsborough County Commission since
2002. She's distinguished herself by fighting for stricter ethics standards, promoting regional cooperation, and waging a battle
against Tampa Electric's plans to run 125-foot-tall power poles through a Hillsborough neighborhood.

Castor, the daughter of former Florida Education Commissioner Betty Castor, seems capable of stepping into a leadership role in the
state's congressional delegation. Her goals include ethics reform on Capitol Hill, simplifying recent Medicare reform, and enabling
Medicare to negotiate for prescription drug prices.

Adams, a Temple Terrace architect, has little political experience. He might be a more viable candidate someday, particularly if he
continues to work to expand educational and economic opportunities in the region's poorest neighborhoods.

We recommend Kathy Castor for the U.S. House of Representatives, District 11.
