We frequently get these types of calls from people who've recently moved
into a home with an alarm.  They don't have the code and they don't know who
installed the system.  They almost never have any interest in the alarm
other than how to silence it.  I usually ask them to check the control panel
or window decals for the service phone number of the company that installed
the system.  The amazing thing is that these folks will try to find someone
on the Internet before checking the Yellow Pages.

If I hear a siren in the background and they've found us online (we don't
advertise in the YP) I figure they're probably not a burglar.  Imagine some
thief breaking into a house at night and then going online to find someone
to help him kill the alarm.  :^)

If they seem legitimate I explain how to disable the siren without killing
the system.  I also advise them to get it serviced in case the smoke
detectors are part of the system.  Finally, I explain that we sell alarm
systems and components online to DIYers and if they want help in that regard
they can call back during business hours.  If they have any interest at all
in that area we will make a sale.
