Re: United Emirates Port Deal

I'd rather let most of them live in prison. However, I know of
one fellow who went to prison for violent crimes. I met him
while I was involved in prison ministry many years ago. Among
the many fakes, this one fellow seemed to have genuinely changed.
I submitted a proposal to the parole board for him to enter a
treatment program where I also did volunteer work.

That gentleman's name is Steven Chambers. Instead of spending
his life in prison he went through a year of treatment for his
drug problems, got his GED and then went on to bible college.
Steve is now the pastor of a small church in Virginia where he
also raised a family.

Most of the guys I met during the weekly meetings over the years
were never going to change and they deserved the hard life they
got. A select few do change their lives though.

As to the death penalty, there are people for whom I feel it is
deserved. The problem is that every so often an innocent person
is executed. Since there's no way to be certain that won't
happen again, I would prefer that they be given a sentence of
life without possibility of parole.

I realize that making an argument for humanity and decency in
this newsgroup is like casting pearls before swine, but there are
plenty of pearls to go around. Feel free to grouse.
