You're basically spouting "the party line" there Jim.  Japan was on its
knees and would have surrendered (I guess you didn't see the History
Channel Special).  The US didn't have to invade the country or drop the
bomb.  They could simply have choked off everything but humanitarian aid
and won the war that way.  Dropping "Little Boy" and "Fat Man" was
nothing more than an extension of the testing for the weapon's
development *on a live target*.  The sentiment of the time had a lot to
do with it as well.  America was "dragged into" fighting with the attack
on Pearl Harbor and Truman literally jumped at the chance for "payback".
