SUBJECT:         Modem Setup

DATE:               Monday, December 11, 2006

Contact sales@xxxxxxxxx if you would like to receive the software via
e-mail.

All these changes pertain to the setup screen of the DL900 software. Modem
setup for the Windows version and Setup for the DOS version.

DOS: First check the COM port settings. Leave the initialization string at
the bottom at the default S7=255S10=255X0T and see if it dials with the COM
port setting you entered. Try changing just COM 1 to 4 since all zeros in
address and IRQ will look up the default. If you have an unusual setting
such as COM 3 IRQ 5 then change the IRQ setting to match. If you need to
enter the address it uses a leading zero, e.g. 03F8. These settings can be
checked in Control panel, then Modems, then the Diagnostics tab then More
Info or Query Modem.

Windows: select the modem in the top "Connect using" line of the Modem setup
screen. Most external modems are not detected and shown by Windows. Go to
Control and select Modems or Phone and Modem Options then add the modem on
those screens.

Once the modem is dialing and the panel is answering any of the following
changes may be necessary to allow your modem to work with our controls. In
all the following modem commands there are no letter Os, only the number
zero. Check your modem manual to find which commands are valid for your
modem.

For speaker control - not needed for Windows version
L0 or L1- Low speaker volume

L2-                  Medium speaker volume

L3-                  High speaker volume
M0-                 Speaker off

M1- Speaker on until carrier detected

M2-                 Speaker always on

To help connect

&FE0- Reset to factory defaults, MUST be at the beginning of the
string.  Use this if

other software might be leaving the modem setup in unexpected way. For the
Windows version place &F at the beginning of init. string one(1).

&C1 - Set carrier to follow panel carrier. (Usually the
default)

S9=1 - Reduce carrier detect time. This may help with a
consistent "Unable to

receive STATUS " message. (This command has been made permanent part

of the setup for versions 3.72 and later so you don't need it here any more)

B1 - Switch to US frequencies. (Bell) Also B16 for Bell
103 in some modems if

supported.

S7=255 - This is the time to wait for the panel to answer. It can be
lowered to a

minimum of about 100 for panels that answer on the 8th ring.

S10=255 - This is time for loss of carrier. It must remain above 220.
We recommend only

                        254 or 255.

X0 - Allows dialing without dial tone. Not necessary when
using phone lines.

T - Touch Tone dialing. Change to P if pulse dialing is
needed.

To help when the modem will not hang up properly

&D2 - Modem DTR signal forces hang-up. (Usually the default)

To downgrade fast modems

&Q0    -           Straight asynchronous mode.

&K0    -           Disable flow control.

S37=3N0  -    Fix at 300 baud.

F1 - Fix at 300 baud. Shorthand for above if supported.

\N1 - Direct operating mode. Try this first.

\Q0 - Disable serial port flow control

\G0 - Disable modem port flow control

\J0 - BPS rate adjust disable

%C0   -           Disable MNP 5 compression

%E0 - Disable auto-retrain. Helpful if you get "Control has
answered" but no farther with

a fast modem.

Here are specific initialization strings on some modem models that other
dealers have worked with and now have operating properly. All commands use
only the number zero (0) NOT the letter Oh (O). The default string is
S7=255S10=255X0T.

NOTE: If your modem is 33.6 or faster and it is not on this list, try the
following initialization strings first:               1)
S7=255S10=255X0T\N1S37=3N0

                                                            2)
S7=255S10=255X0T+MS=B103

#- Recommended Modems. * - Needs phone line voltage.

***- Windows DL900 V1.11 and newer only. All currently known US Robotics and
3Com modems will work. Model 5699 may need driver updates. Model 5660 must
have a new driver and is not recommended. Set port baud rate, on modem setup
screen, to 19,200 on 33.6 and faster modems. IBM 3CXM356 56K PCMCIA and
Toshiba Noteworthy are made by US Robotics.

If a PCMCIA modem will not initialize, try turning off power management in
control panel of Windows 95. Test by removing the modem, waiting for the
disable tones, replacing the modem, wait for enable tones and attempting to
dial a few seconds later.

If you find another modem that works well with the downloading please send
the model and the initialization string and we will add it to our list.

We have found a driver package that allows our DOS program to use
 "WinModems" or Windows only modems for Windows 95/98/ME. In addition we
have started running into computer systems that are equipped with "WinPorts"
or Windows only com ports. This driver package will also allow you to use
your trusty Hayes Smartmodem 1200 or 2400 on these new machines. It is
Turbocom VIP from Pacific CommWare. Phone: 541-482-2744 or
