Sorry Mike,  my book must be too old.  MS-4424  doc # 15153 ECN-95-067
This book specs. Maximum charging circuit 27.6v 1.5amp

the book for MS-4424B doc # 15125  ECN 95-354
specs. maximum charging circuit 27.6v 1.5 amp

the logic seem reasonable to me if your using 24 volt battery load a
charging level
of 25-27vdc would keep the bats charged but not boil out the gel.
yet still high enough to recharge after a drain within the 24-36 hour
limit..
