Door strikes come in two "flavours". Fail "Secure" and Fail "Safe". The
former means it stays locked in a power failure (and usually requires
voltage to open) and the latter means it opens in the absence of power. In
Vancouver, door strikes on egress doors are illegal. You must use a
mag-lock. The bylaw also states that special hardware must be used to open
the door in an emergency and that the door must release within 15 seconds of
actuation and remain released until the door has been opened (signage on the
door must also clearly state that emergency actuation of the door release is
irreversible and will occur within 15 seconds after applying a force of 90
Newtons to the releasing hardware). The door must also open when the fire
alarm is activated or when power fails to the unit. Vancouver remains one
of the most strictest jurisdictions when it comes to electronically locking
doors
I would caution the OP to consult the local AHJ. There may be special
requirements that must be met in his jurisdiction as well.
