I kinda of like what John has outlined.  I fear that if we start getting
into mandating version number formats and tracking all changes for every
version in the XML, this is going to be a real maintenance headache.

I really like the idea of xPLHAL or an xPLDiag program comparing what it
knows about the device with the XML and suggesting an upgrade (perhaps even
fetching the new XML file if the user desires it).  That seems a pretty
simple, understandable level.  It also implicitly leaves the format of the
raw version number to the developers (which I think is a good thing :-)

But if we start having to track each version, keeping the XML file up will
get complicated and error prone.

Again, just my opinion.
