This looks good - just one comment:

This should never happen - and if it does, it's only because a device
has violated the xPL protocol.

The protocol states that every xPL device must be able to come up with a
unique instance value on first startup - to avoid issues of duplicate
source names.
If a device isn't able to do that, then only one instance of that device
is permitted on an xPL network.
