Presumably the entire menu structure and text strings would not be stored
on
the PIC (just the current display), so maybe the best approach would be to
allow a user to define their menu structure in an xml file read in by the
xPL connector application.  That way a user can have whatever menu
structure
they like.

How about UP and DOWN (to scroll through menu items), and SELECT and BACK
(for changing menu or triggering an action) as physical buttons, with
another two that are context sensitive and allow the use to change a value
(so you could dim/bright if a light was the current selection, for example)
