xPLMediaNet Progress Made

  • Subject: xPLMediaNet Progress Made

Hi all,

Have completed the changes to how xPLMediaNet loads, and it's working fine.

One issue is that the order of the sources in the menu is now alphabetical
(i.e. Browse comes before Music) due to there no longer being anything that
specifies the order that they should appear. Is this an issue please?

xPL is now an independent module (but will be included in the standard
install, as this is "xPL"MediaNet after all!), this means if you
want to
change the way xPL works with xPLMediaNet then you can easily edit the
source code. A side effect is that devices can now have any name you wish
(a
common request) including spaces etc. The xPL module strips the name down
to
xPL valid characters (i.e. strips spaces etc) and uses upto the first 16
chars.

Currently you have to stop xPLMediaNet, edit the names in clients.xml, and
restart. The xPL module will automatically use the new names on load. When
I
can work out how to include a text box and button in the web interface
you'll be able to edit these names without a restart - but this may not
make
it into the first release.

Next up for changes is the web interface which is almost a total rewrite.
Also the "jukebox" source is being changed to be a standard music
source
(rather than a special exception). This means it will appear as a music
source on device menus like any other source, rather than appearing only on
the web interface.

I'm going to take advantage of the modular nature of xPLMediaNet to speed
up
release, and therefore the initial release will probably be "Rio"
only.
SliMP3 and ExStreamer modules will follow very quickly, as they'll just
need
minor modifications and some testing. Initial release will be to the
current
testers, followed a week later by a public release.

Unfortunately I'm working this weekend, so will probably still be 2 to 3
weeks before a test release, so public release will hopefully be within a
month or so.

Source code will be published within a month of the public release (got to
sort out the website), though anyone wanting to develop anything sooner can
e-mail me for a copy of the source code once the public release is made.

Regards
Tony
