Try converting the RGB to 8bit greyscale. Now you only have 256
values to worry about. Then it becomes a matter of which contrast
looks better on the dinky little DAR LCD. Anything above your
contrast point becomes white, below is black. I don't recall a RGB to
greyscale algorythm but you should be able to google one.

A day or so ago you sent me the transcode.xml line to pipe through
lame. It didn't work for me but it's possible I didn't have lame
installed correctly. I moved LAME.EXE and LAME_enc.dll from another
PC to the WINNT directory. Anyway, after adding the line, the DAR
would hang in "initializing" limbo. I removed the line and all is
well.
