Ok, this makes sense.

What does confuse me still is what should happen when random mode is
switched off.

I'm guessing in this scenario we just play the remaining unplayed tracks in
the order they are in the queue?

As rleong1 says, the repeat none/one/all will handle if the list is
repeated
or not.
