Personally I think that's the way to go.  Each device then just slots into
the network and then decodes the xPL message and controls whatever it's
attached to appropriately.  Ideally you would have a generic RS232 or RS485
device that could have the translation logic bootloaded into it.  So you
could upload the VFD type code to translate text=My message to the
appropriate rs232 feed to the display unit or you code upload the code that
understands how a barcode reader works.

Not that I've seen but there are a few ethernet implementations on PIC
chips that use chips like the Realtek ethernet chip to do the interfacing.
By the time you have a ethernet stack implemented it doesn't leave to much
space on even the bigger chips for the other stuff.  Been meaning to
investigate further but not yet had the time.
