fact, it will cause problems)

I'd suggest the easiest way to protect your system is this:

While disconnected from the Internet:

Right click on "My Network Places", choose properties
Right click on your Internet Connection, choose properties
Click the "advanced" tab

Under "Internet Connection firewall" tick the box that says
"protect my
computer".

Hit Ok, and reconnect to the Internet.

That's you: XP's inbuilt firewall isn't flawless, but it will stop the
vast majority of tinkering, and prevent script kiddies from getting at
your PC.

I have no idea why your friend suggested that you couldn't have a
firewall in this situation: that's just nonsense.
