Access still has a query field length limit of 255 characters though.

SQL server varchar limit is 8000 if you have version 7 or greater, prior to
that it was 255. However there is also a total 8000 limit on the table, so
you could not have one field with 6000 characters and another with 3000 for
example. Of course there is always the option of the text datatype, but
there are some limitations as to which commands will work with that.
