I think it is going to depend on the number of devices and the
collision risk. As a minimum you'd want to protect the packet
integrity with a CRC.

With a small number of devices and the right coding of the collision
detect, it should be OK. Just go for a multi-master system.

There was a bit of a debate on the list a while back but I've gone
down the Ethernet route for now.
