Serial over Ethernet

Hi folks,

This is not directly related to xPL, but I think it is of interest? I have
a Comfort system and it has an RS232 interface as do many devices. This is
a pain as it is in the Loft and my PC is downstairs. I notice that Cytech
now do an Ethernet interface to Comfort. As it turns out this just a Serial
interface with a Serial-to-Ethernet adapter on it. This adapter is made by:
www.tibbo.com <<a href="http://www.tibbo.com";>http://www.tibbo.com</a>> . Their
web site indicates that they
produce an embedded version EM100 as used by Cytech and an external version
DS100. It seems to me that the use of such devices with a protocol like xPL
would be very useful. Tibbo supply a virtual com port driver that runs on a
PC and enables a PC to have upto 20 serial ports! They also supply some VB6
examples on how to communicate with the device directly. The device is
programmable in that you can configure the baud rate etc. The simplest
option is to use existing xPL code with the virtual device driver. Do you
think there would be any advantage to creating a native xPL interface to
these devices?

I have no idea where to obtain these devices or how much they cost, I may
think again when I find out! I guess there are many such devices available,
each with its own proprietry protocol!

Sorry if this is totally off topic, I just thought it was interesting.

Regards,

Chris Williams
