The easiest and quickest way to interface a serial device to the xPL
environment is to use the devcom templates. All you need do is insert the
VB6 code that you need to decode the serial input and then just stick it
into a xPL message. For example my last xPL app which downloads internet
files to the PC on request took about 20 minutes to write and test. The
development so far has been along the lines of when you need something you
just build it and as time goes on the amount of programs available is
growing.

What happens from there? Well the way I would handle it is to use the
xplhal engine to run a VB script when it get messages from that device and
issue further messages to the device controlling the lights say a CM12U for
X10 or some other serial device that powers the lights. There is already a
CM12U xPL program.

The advantage being that the different serial devices don't even need to be
on the same computer just the same network. So you could have the RF
serial device send messages from it's computer and the have a simple xPL
program driving the lighting unit on another.
