That's does the trick, can you tell I'm still learning this?

It's just a case of determining what you mean by the 1-wire gateway. It
could be the whole one wire network or alternatively a particular branch of
the one wire network. Initially, to get something up and running the best
bet is to treat the whole network as one instance. Then later develop this
to have the instance at branch level.

The advantage, longer term, of having instance by branch is that when you
request the living room temperature you don't have to read and receive
details about all temperature devices on the whole network just those in
the living room. Of course this will mean you need a bit more programming
in the controller unit.

I try and have a look at your xap curtain controller PIC code and see if I
can use that as a basis for developing a some 1-wire temperature xPL PIC
code. Is there any restriction on the length of the device name? I was
thinking of just using the ID for the time being.
