For a PC-based device, you could use a combination of the IP address and
port number, perhaps. So 192.168.0.16:50001 might get
someone-somedevice.default1601, kind of thing.

If you were being really smart, you might find something relevant to the
link layer, like the MAC address or something PPP-related (username
perhaps).
