"Indicators" rather than "display"

I think that our current notion of display is usually text oriented? But
shouldn't it be extended to include the notion of indicators? I'm
thinking along the lines of displaying, say, a voicemail waiting
indicator, missed call indicator, or e-mail waiting indicator on
displays which aren't physically big enough for a lot of words. I don't
think this notion of a locally rendered graphic / LED / whatever is
catered for in the current display schema. Am I right? Any comments on
the best way to go about supporting this?

Patrick
