Not sure how you are envisaging using xPort - it is basically a web server
and a serial pass through. Along with Lantronix's port redirector you can
effectively use the remote serial port on the xPort as if it were local. If
you were wanting to provide a direct bridge function to Ethernet there's a
bit of work to be done here - for example udp support (I believe the
inbuilt
serial is tcp) plus port usage plus packet formation - you might be able to
get a workable xAP solution - I haven't got far enough to know either way.
It was one of my choices when I was PIC based but for the Rabbit it was not
needed. The xPort provides no on board scripting - when you us it as a web
server with any form for dynamic pages or serial interaction for example it
needs Java to do anything clever - effectively running client side.

I don't think that Lantronix make their serial protocol available so
probably the alternate way of xAP Ethernet enabling a device (if you can't
do it fully embedded) is to have a hub on the PC that supports a serial
port
redirected using the Lantronix software to your device via the xPort . I
think that should work OK ! I must admit I have not played much with mine -
just using them as serial servers really.
