Heya Paul,

How about 3 classes.

SerialComms, or something, that implements this part:

One that allows simple communications with the serial port and the
ability to be configured from the parameters (specified). Also has
other parameters which can be set by the xAPplication using the class
for things such as Line Terminator. More details on this below

With no particular xAP knowledge (note that I edited this description
above slightly to remove the xAP specifics).

Then implement another class that uses this an object of this type to
implement the xAPSerialComm description: "One that allows simple
communications with the serial port and the ability to be configured
from the parameters in a Serial.Setup message body". And also the
sending/receiving of simple messages as described in Kevin's serial
comms schema.

And then thirdly xAPSerialBus that again uses the first class,
SerialComms, or whatever it's called, to implement the xAP message
sending/receiving/onwards transmission for your xAP485 project.
