try using <link> instead.
All the BR versions insert what came from the display message with a
<BR/> at the end. Depending on your jabber client you should be able
to
get a debug view to see what actually got sent, usually f12. Also if you
send:

<a href="<link>">click here</a>
Then the HTML part of the message will look like
<a href="http://www.server.com";>click
here</a>
but the non html part of the message will be stripped so you would get
click here

depending on you client you may get either.
