Kevin's pretty much summed up all that I'd have asked myself.

If any GUI app fires up as a hub it'll state "(xFx Hub)" in the
title
bar, so that's a firm indication if it's acting as a hub.

What I'd suggest is closing everything and running the GUI Hub and see
if it moans about not being able to listen for messages.

Are there any error type messages displayed in the message/status bar
at the bottom of any app?

As Kevin mentioned, when Viewer starts it will always display itself
in the tree on the left as it receives its own initial h/b message
back again. If that isn't happening, could you describe your network
interfaces? There are sometimes a couple of problems that some folks
have when multiple network interfaces are present.
