Try a chandlers (e.g. force4) - boats use these kind of detectors, and most
have relay contacts for remote alarming.
You will find it very difficult to find information on the connectors
because they can't be purchased on the open market - this is to prevent DIY
installs. Perhaps you can persuade a gas-safe engineer to help?
The bottles must be kept outside. Butane ("red") has a lower
freezing point
than propane ("blue"), and is therefore a better choice for you.
If you
make an insulated enclosure, it will need vents at the bottom as the gas is
heavier than air.
Lastly, buy a bottle of gas detector fluid for testing the install once
you've done it -- it's magic stuff and was a great help when I was checking
my install.
