Home Automation with cheap wifi modules

Hi all,

I have started to swap out a lot of the troublesome Zwave or other devices
I
have for ESP8266/ESP12E based WiFi modules and switching from Homeseer to
Node-red and Mosquitto MQTT running on a Raspberry Pi3 and the very fact
that so far everything has been rock solid is making me consider swapping
out all of the Zwave modules for ESP12E based modules. I have even taken
the
time to redesign the Home Control modules I have to replace the internal
electronics with ESP12 modules and a new power supply.

The very poorly designed Everspring lamp modules have had the same
treatment
and new boards design. Them and the Home Control modules will be here in a
week or so.

The best bit is Node-red. At first I was sceptical it would be a good
control platform but it has turned out to be far easier than I thought and
soon once the modules are built, I will be shutting down the Homeseer
system, something I have been using for about 15 years now.

For anyone interested, this website by the guy who designed the old APPCON
PIC micro based Home Automation system years ago has posted lots of really
nice code for the ESP12 modules along with heaps of stuff on Node-red.

http://tech.scargill.net/home-control-2016/

Another nice addition I found was the Enocean wireless energy harvesting
switches. No battery and 868Mhz or 912Mhz operation. A few companies are
offering these for simple stick on the wall and instant switching. There is
a library for Node-red and using MQTT and the above ESP12 modules, I have
instant on off control of lighting.

Dave.

Very funny Scotty, now beam down my clothes.
